Drama at Silver Spires by Ann Bryant

Georgie is a student and tries her best not to get into mischief so far that is not turning out as well as she planed. With her goody 2 shoes enemy trying to make sure Georgie succeeds in getting expelled and that goody 2 shoed enemy is called Cara - who sadly is also a drama student which makes them very competitive. If you had the chance to meet Cara you would describe her as a spoilt rich girl that doesn’t have any true friends. Not like Georgie does. Anyway she has 4 great friends luckily to share a sleeping dorm with.

The point of this story is that there are auditions for the school play, "Little Women". Georgie would love it if she could have the part of Amy, one of the sisters. To make things even worse, Cara wants the part of Amy as well. But of course Cara gets what she wants and has the part. Georgie at least got to be back up for Amy’s part in case Cara gets sick. Suddenly Cara get a sore throat.

Georgie gets to fill in as Amy but sadly a week from the performance Cara shows up and is ready to play Amy. Suddenly something strange happens and Cara has fallen down the stairs and has broken her leg. Cara says it wasn’t an accident and until the person owns up there will be no school play. Lilly, her best friend, owns up even though she didn’t do it, it was Georgie. But if Georgie had owned up she would expelled and wouldn’t be able to play the part of Amy. Lilly didn’t get expelled as this was her first ever warning and the show must go on.

I felt that this book reflected my life here at Marylebone that’s why it’s so special to me and I was hoping that you would get to know me better in this book. I will grade this book 5/5.

At the Sign of the Sugared Plum by Mary Hooper

I found this book very emotional because the girl in the book called Hannah suffers to see her new friends in London die of the Great Plague but her friend tells her one wish to do for her after she dies. To take care of her mistress's baby daughter and take her out of London. The plague was caught from a cook who served her mistress and stayed at the house. Hannah feels that she shouldn’t have came to London to help her sister with her sweet shop called The Sugared Plum. But Hannah did not receive the letter that her sister gave her which said "Do not come Hannah it's far too Dangerous the plague is on its way.".

At the end Hannah does her friend's wish and takes the baby who had became an orphan after the master and mistress's death with her sister out of London. This book makes me feel upset that there is now a cure for the plague and all those people who passed away because of the lack of cleanness they had in those times and Hannah had to suffer a lot.

The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

"The Railway Children" is about three children who move from their city villa to a big yet cold house in the countryside after their father gets sent to prison. They become very poor which is very unfortunate since their mother gets very ill and they can't afford what she needs. The most fantastic thing about living in the country for the children was that at the bottom of the hill where they lived was a railway station which "was very dear to them". In the end of the book everything turned out fine. Their dad came to live with them after being let out of prison because he did not do anything.

I enjoyed this book because I found it really nice that the children tried their best to help their mother and try and distract her from what's happening to their father even though they tried hard not to think what is happening to him. They did not what their father was doing because their mother had said it was about business. There was a bit of a clue when the son called Peter made a trap that worked perfectly on the parlour maid Ruth who boxed his ears and said "If you do that again you will be sent where your precious father has gone."

In this book they also take this lost and ill Russian writer (whose book their mother had read which was about the poor and homeless)into their house and look after him until he gets better. They also look after a boy who falls over in a race on the train tracks under a pitch black tunnel. They took him back to their house until he got better. They also saved a train from crashing which also caused the oldest sister Roberta to faint which definitely caused the train to stop.

Out of 10 I would give it a 8 because there was not enough drama I don't think. The book was very nice to read and I enjoyed it as well.

Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah

"Refugee Boy" is an emotional and delightful book. It starts off explosively and ends in a similar way. You get pulled into the story. You feel like you know each character and their past lives. Furthermore I think the book is very interesting and it shows how difficult people's lives are. Not always is life as easy as ABC: it can be tough, terrifying and petrifying with so many hardships to cope with.

The Unforgotten Coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce

This book is based on two refugee brothers called Nergui and Chinguis who come from a small town called Xanadu in Mongolia. They arrive in England with other members of their family. They join a primary school in Bootle a town in Liverpool where they meet a kind and caring girl called Julie who is to become their school guide. Julie is the narrator of the novel.

When they first arrive at the school they are extemely shy and nervous. During school time break Julie introduces them to some of the school games. At first they didn’t even know how to play football.

The other children in the school find the two brothers quite strange, as they always wear a fury fluffy coat and refuse to take it off, Nergui the youngest brother always wears a hat covering his face, the reason for this is that he believes he is being followed by an evil demon.

Chinguis and Nergui are very discreet about where they live, and don’t even tell Julie. However, one day when Julie needs to return Chinguis's coat to him after swapping him for her Everton football shirt for a non-uniform day, her mother finds out where they live. Julie gets a big surprise when she visits them, and the mystery surrounding them gets deeper.

When I first started to read this book it took me a while to get into the story, however once I started to understand what the book was about I couldn’t put the book down and read it in almost two days. It was quite mysterious and interging at times. I found some part of the story even quite emotional, as I think being a refugee can have a lot of bad memories for people and it may be difficult to trust people. This is what I thought Nergui and Chinuis first felt when they arrived in England and started their new school. It made me realise how fortunate and lucky I am to live in a wonderful country with peace and no war. I thought that Nergui and Chinguis were very brave and they were an inspiration towards other refugees in the world. It made me realise how much some people's possessions mean to them, like Nergui and Chinguis with their coats and hat, they were obviously there comforts and reminder of their country, Mongolia.

The Inkheart Trilogy by Cornelia Funke

This story is about Mo and Meggie Folchart. Mo has extraordinary powers, his voice can bring characters out of books. But he has no control over who comes out of the book or who goes into the book taking the character's place. When Meggie is three Mo discovers his talent when upon reading a book called "Inkheart", three men by the name of Capricorn, Basta and Dustfinger appear in his living room. But Resa, Meggie's mother, has vanished.

This story is told in third-person narration. It tells us the thoughts of the characters to help us understand them and the story a bit more. At the beginning of each chapter there is a quote from a different book. This helps us get into the theme of the story as the story is about one book so why not have a bit of other books inside?

In my opinion this a good novel because it is adventurous and I don't think there is anything like it.I would only give it four stars because the third and final book, "Inkdeath", wasn't as good as the first two because it took time to get to the point.I would recommend it to adventure seekers and constant readers.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

In this strange adventure of Harry Potter, something supernatural is waiting to be unleashed, while Harry discovers new and extraordinary things about himself and the wizarding world. During his third year at Hogwarts School, many secrets are uncovered as he journeys on and continues to explore this marvellous place, where the oddest of things lie but how there is always an answer to everything.

This book captures the intensity of how hard it is for Harry and will boggle your minds.

Before I Die by Jenny Downham

A sad story about a girl diagnosed with leukaemia who decides to make a list of things that she wants to do before she dies. While going along she completes these points with a few breaking of the rules. A book that pulls on your heart strings and makes you happy to be alive.

The Sleeping Sword by Michael Morpurgo

This book is based on a young boy who has a dream that he becomes blind in an accident. His parents had to pay for him to attend a special school for blind people, however they found it very difficult to fund. He didn’t really like being there as he missed his friends truly. He even tried to commit suicide. Anna his best friend decided to raise money for him to have a private tutor at home; this was successful and he left the special school.

One day when his father was ploughing on his farm, he came across a silver, shiny sword. Archaeologists told him it belonged to King Arthur, he decided to return it to him. The journey to King Arthur was very adventurous, he experienced going on a ghost ship, beautiful seagulls flying and fish leading him and Anna to King Arthur. King Arthur asked them to bury it and wished for all their dreams to come true. The young boy woke up and realized it was all a dream.

This book was very fascinating and mysterious as you didn’t know what was going to happen next. I found it very hard to put it down, once I started to read it.
