This book was set in the form of a diary and just from the cover I could see that it was going to be a tasty read. It genuinly warmed my heart and at the end it was so sad! It is the diary of Cassandra Mortmain - daughter of a father who once wrote a book that was successful but, once sent to prison for in a loss of temper brandishing a cake knife at his wife, he never wrote again and is reduced to reading detective novels in the gatehouse. The mother died by the way but not from the cake knife! The stepdaughter of elegant Topaz, an artist's model who communes with nature by standing naked on hills. The sister of Rose - who I think is a complete prat - vain, and pretty. And being crushed on by Steven - the stable boy at their home and the sort of character that you instantly sympathize with. They live in a castle in a place called Godsend - which is ironic. They are in poverty until, while Cassandra is in the bath, two men come in from America. Rose soon becomes engaged to the oldest and then Cassandra finds herself drawn to........but you won't find out the ending from me! Seriously: read this book. Peace out.
